Viper Rendezvous Hastings Nebraska

Five hundred plus miles away in Hastings Nebraska was the place to be last weekend with your Viper. It started out with arriving on  Thursday afternoon to get a trailer parking spot for the weekend , getting the Viper out of the trailer and going through "Tech" to make sure your Viper was ready for the track. Hanging out and renewing friendships was the order for the rest of the afternoon until the parade lap at 5:00. Well the time rolled around and as folks were getting ready to do the parade lap it started to rain, and rain and rain some more. I think there was one or two cars that attempted to do it but most decided not to possibly due to the fact that most were running slicks and slicks are not exactly a rain tire. We ended up calling it a day and headed to the hotel to check in and meet at the Mexican restaurant for dinner. After dinner everyone retired to the hotel to get some much needed sleep.

The next morning up early to be at the track by 6:30 for a mandatory drivers meeting at 7:00. There we were told what to expect for the day and what was expected of the drivers. We were set up in 4 run groups with group 1 being the most skilled, group 2 intermediate, group 3 a little less intermediate and group 4 the rookie/student group. The track went hot at 8:00 with group 1 and each group had 3 -25 minute sessions in the morning with provided lunch and 2 - 25 minute sessions in the afternoon wrapping up the day about 5:00 and off to the Clubhouse for a nice barbecue dinner. After dinner some took the Bacardi Bus Ride with George on the track it is quite the experience and George the track manager is quite the character. After the bus ride we were all invited to the Furstenau Social hosted at the Klatt Garage. What a beautiful garage with a couple dozen cool old cars and the front of it looked like an old gas station from the 50's.

Saturday up early again for another mandatory drivers meeting to go over the days events. The track went hot again at 8:00 with 3-25 minuter sessions for each group. About 11;30 a group photo on the track with a drone and off to lunch to recharge. After lunch the Viper-Cross which is an autocross that they use the whole track so almost 2 minutes for an autocross run, a little different than we usually do but it was a lot of fun. Basically a high speed autocross. We started a little late we got just a little rain then it cleared up and we were on. After the Viper-Cross all  the groups had 1 more 25 minute session before we were done for the day. Then back to the hotel to get ready for the banquet. It was very nice held at the Elks Club a mile from the track. We had Prime rib, veggies, potatoes and chocolate dessert. After dinner a nice talk from Bob Woodhouse about how Viper got started and a visit from the "Stig". During the banquet several awards were given out for best times, on the track and Viper-cross and a few others. Some of the winners in our IL region were Jim Walker, Doug Campbell and Jeremy Walker. Wrapped up the evening around 10:00 saying goodbyes and heading back to the hotel to get some sleep for the long journey home. There were a few hard core guys that stayed and ran a couple hours on Sunday but most headed back. It was a fantastic weekend enjoyed by all. We had 14 out of the 60 Vipers from the VOA of IL region.
