Jul 15: Summer Cruise – Wisconsin
Our summer cruise will begin at 10:00 am. We’ll meet at the east end of the Woodfield Mall parking lot near the Sears store, our regular meeting place for cruises. From there we will travel to our lunch destination about 11am. After lunch we’ll travel to SC Johnson which will be about an hour’s drive. Our tour begins at 1:30 and will be about one and half hours long.
Their global headquarters in Racine, Wisconsin, includes the spectacular Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Administration Building and Research Tower which opened in 1950. If laid end to end, there is 43 miles of Pyrex glass tubing to the tree like columns soaring in the Great Workroom which is more than one-half acre of open workspace and the “bird cage” circular elevators that run from the basement to the Penthouse level, giving a panoramic view of the building. It is truly a unique work of art that reflects that innovation and adventure.
We will also be visiting the family home: Wingspread which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as well. Completed in 1939, the 14,000 square foot home was named Wingspread, reflecting its four wings that spread out from a central core living space. Our one hour tour begins at 3:30.
Just a short 5 minute drive away from Wingspread is the Wind Point Lighthouse. The Wind Point Lighthouse stands 108 feet tall and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was lit for the first time on November 15, 1880 and continues to be lit to this day. The lighthouse is also a park and has a beautiful brick garden.
After our fun day of touring and exploring, we will head home and stop for dinner at the Brat Shop, in Kenosha, WI.
Another fun day full of friends, good times and of course Viper Driving!
