May 26-29: Spring Cruise – Kentucky
Memorial Day Weekend and Kentucky horse country! What a great way to spend Memorial Day weekend. We will start our journey to KY horse country on Friday, May 26. We will travel down on this day and stop as needed for bathroom breaks, food and fuel. When we get to Louisville we’ll be heading to the Crowne Plaza, Louisville Airport location, where we’ll be staying Friday and Saturday night.
Saturday our day will start at the Kentucky Derby Museum with a 30 minute guided tour including Churchill Downs Racing, resident thoroughbred & miniature horses, and other exhibits. We will enjoy a buffet lunch in Millionaires Row and watch the races! Some people may even be inclined to make a bet or two. After lunch we will head out to tour the Jim Beam distillery and then head further South and visit the Corvette Museum.
Sunday morning we will head east to the Kentucky Horse Park. The Horse Park is the place to get close to all kinds of breeds of horses. There are also many statues and markers to honor the memories of famous champion horses throughout the years. We will also visit the American Saddlebred Museum and learn the role Saddlebred horses have played in the American history and culture. Next up will be the International Museum of the Horse which examines the roles of horses throughout world history, from ancient times to world’s most popular sporting events. After lunch, we’ll head down the road a bit and visit the Old Friends Retired Thoroughbreds. Old Friends provides a dignified retirement to Thoroughbreds whose racing and breeding careers have come to an end. This farm is 136 acres and has over 175 rescued and retired horses. After our tour and visiting we will head to our next hotel, the Country Inn and Suites in Georgetown, KY.
Monday morning we will visit The Town Branch brewing and distilling company before heading home. Town Branch produces the Kentucky Ale family of beers and is also the oldest craft brewery in Kentucky. After this tour we will head back towards home.
