Fall Cruise October 7-8th, 2017 – Northern IL, Southern WI

Cheesemaking, Popcorn, Metal Art, rainy curvy roads, great food & friends, Field of Dreams and ending a cruise with great sunny day and more curvy roads!  What more could a person ask for??  The last cruise of the year had 13 cars and 26 people participating.  Our Saturday morning started off a little rainy but everyone was in good spirits and we headed to Monroe, WI where we learned about the history making of cheese.  Donna was our host and told us about the history of cheesemaking and showed us one of the first cheese houses in Wisconsin.  The tour was very interesting and we all learned about how cheese was made.  Then we had to travel a short distance to the Swiss Colony outlet store where we all walked away with some cheese in our bags and maybe a large art piece as well!  We had a great lunch at Baumgartners where they are known for their cheese soup.

After lunch we headed to Rural Route One Popcorn Shop.  One foot inside the shop and the smell of popcorn overwhelmed us!  We had samples along with delicious apple cider and again we walked out the door with bags of popcorn in our hands.

Our next stop was a metal art shop.  Tom told us how his dad started the shop and how he got into making unique art with different pieces of metal.  Several in the group purchased squirrels and birds metal art.  Tom had some really cool pieces of art, too big to carry in the Vipers!
We then drove about another 60 miles alongside the Wisconsin River.  Even though it was raining off and on, the scenery was very pretty.  Rolling hills down to the river and some of the trees had started to change colors.  We crossed the Mississippi and headed south to Dyersville, IA where we had a great dinner and then headed back to the hotel.
Sunday morning we headed out to the Field of Dreams movie site.  What a great way to spend a sunny day!  We started our day with lining up the Vipers in front of the farm house and taking a group picture.  Since there was a baseball game ready to start, we asked the team to stand in between the cars for another group picture.  The teams that were about to play a game were not the usual miner league guys.  The guys were a little older but had the baseball spirit!  While we were in the house and then later out talking to the Ghost, they played a game that we got to watch.
We learned from our narrator Craig about how this farm house was selected for the movie site.  Our narrator was also one of the ghosts in the movie and he told us about his part.  He also told us great stories about the movie and the actors that were in it.  Then we headed out to the baseball field and met with one of the Ghost actors.  He also told us stories about the actors and how he became friends with James Earl Jones and drove him around in his pickup truck to see how cows were fed.  James Earl Jones had 4 cows and thought he was a cattle farmer!  We heard lots of stories about Kevin Kostner and how great a person he was as well as an actor.
After our morning at Field of Dreams, we headed to East Dubuque, IL for a great brunch at Timmerman’s Supper Club.  Again, another great meal with friends.  After lunch we started our journey home.  Thanks to Matt Schutte for heading us towards the Stagecoach Trail.  This road ran between Galena and Rockford and what a great curvy, up and down hills, ride it was.  Great rolling hills and hardly any cars on this road.
This cruise will be marked down as a great cruise and a great way to end the year with friends and of course our Vipers!
See everyone at the Holiday Party on Feb 10, 2018!
