General Overview: Autocrosses are basically a mini-race course setup at a variety of venues, typically large parking lots. It is a great way to improve your  car handling skills and meant for both novices and experts. Courses are defined using small orange cones. The object is to travel the course as fast as you can without hitting any cones. Course lengths will be in the 45-55 second range. The club will provide a group parade lap so that you can learn the course and have a preview of what you’ll be driving. You will have between 8-14 total runs during the day. You simply line up at the starting line and you’ll be told when to go. Simply drive the course as fast as you can, typically you start out slow and get faster as the day goes on. Each cone knocked over is a 1 second penalty. It’s safe, fun to drive, it’s easy on the car, and fun to watch!  The club does 3 autocrosses a year as part of its “Triple-Cross” series, 1 autocross as part of the Longest Day event. While it’s not necessary to compete, awards will be provided to the fastest drivers. Training in autocross will also be available at all events. Spectators are always welcome!

Details: This particular event will take place in the large parking lot of Caterpillar. This event will occur rain or shine (unless an extraordinary downpour occurs). Lodging is suggested below if you choose to arrive the night before or need to stay the day after. Participants are asked to bring their helmets (contact us if you don’t have one, we can point you to a place that sells them discounted to the club). All participants must wear closed toed shoes. Speeds at this venue usually do not exceed first gear, but might require a shift into 2nd depending on its layout. If you are towing your car, there will be an area nearby dedicated to tow vehicles and trailers. Spectators are welcome at no charge. We will break for lunch just before 12:00 pm, there are several convenient restaurants surrounding the race park. Coolers will be on hand and water is free to everyone. Once all run groups are finished, we can begin packing up while calculations are made, shortly thereafter we will conclude with awards! Check-in is from 8:00 am – 8:45 am and driving starts at 9:00 am!

Helpful Info: Items that may make the event more enjoyable and comfortable may include sunglasses, hat, suntan lotion, towel, folding chair, and umbrella (for sun and rain). Other items that might be of use are tire pressure gauge, driving gloves, and driving shoes. At the event, there are many folks eager to lend a helping hand with anything if need! It’s a family atmosphere, we all stick together as a group (and yes kids are allowed to come and watch as well).

Registration: Since this will be our first autocross everyone participating is required to send us your matrix sheet (located at the top of this page) and let us know your coming. We need to have you on our list ahead of time so we can create run groups, enter you in our computer, and determine classes. Simply email or call our Performance Driving Director, Mark Schumann, and let him know you’re interested in coming. His phone number is (920) 344-6178 and his email is MarkS@IllinoisVipers.com. Please review the safety requirements at the top of this page before your arrival. When you arrive on premises, you will register with the club and receive a schedule of the days event.

The Day of the Event: For your convenience, we have established a club hot-line: (630) 415-3642. Calling the hotline, and pressing option “3”, will provide you with any up to the second changes or additional information that differs from information contained in your mailer. Please call the hotline and check it the MORNING OF THE EVENT to be advised of any changes. Should you have any questions, never hesitate to contact Mark Schumann directly at his number listed in the registration section above. See you there!
