VOA Illinois Road America Event Crushes Expectations
Well, Viper Family, another race season is officially underway! On Saturday we had the pleasure of driving a new track for the club (for quite a long time at least). A track that people have been asking to add to the roster for quite a long time… ROAD AMERICA! In order to encourage friendly driving and for people to get to know the track before pushing too hard we decided to make this an UNTIMED event. That is, the event did not count towards our season long Triple Crown competition and no trophies were awarded for the day. This was strictly an event just put together to allow people to experience a very loved track and have some fun.
Several members made the drive to Elkhart Lake, WI on Friday night to check into the hotel and join in on a club dinner at the Paddock Club where we had the pleasure of celebrating one of our most infamous members’ birthday… we’re talking about the resident Geek Boy, Gary Grube! It was a truly great time with lots of fun and laughs… and we cannot forget the cake. SO. MUCH. CAKE.
Following dinner we headed back to hotel for a little bit more chit chat before calling it a night. Saturday morning came quickly as the driver’s meeting was scheduled for 7:30 AM and the track went hot at 8:00 AM sharp. Thank goodness for caffeine!
The first sessions of the day were met with some mixed reviews. The veterans were having a blast and the newbies were a bit intimidated and had a hard time getting the lay of the land. We have to give a huge shout out to our Race Director, Mark Schumann, who listened to anyone with concerns and made them comfortable. Weather that was by getting them extra instructor sessions, switching groups around, or sending them to the turn by turn class session he really went above and beyond. By the end of the day everyone was laughing and having a great time. The weather also played ball with us. It was warm while not being hot and the sun was intermittent which kept the drivers nicely balanced. Perfect would not be doing the day justice!
As this was not a competition day no times or results will be posted. If you are interested in seeing your own times you are able to utilize the MyLaps timing app to see what you did (assuming you had your sensor charged up and good to go while driving). We are happy to report that this event was a huge success and we really look forward to going to this track again in the future. Hopefully we will see even more drivers out next time!
